July 4, Rest day at Bannack, MT

We spent the day at Bannack State Park.

Bannack was first settled in 1862, when gold was discovered in Grasshopper Creek.  It had its ups and downs and was not completely abandoned until the 1970’s.  The State took over the ghost town and turned it into a state park.

We took guided tours of the town, and the old mill site.  Later we learned to pan for gold.  We actually were able to find some!  Finally we walked through many of the old buildings on our own.
