The day started with a ride through Picture Gorge.  It is named for Indian petroglyphs on the walls of the canyon.  The canyon was created by the John Day  River eroding the basalt over many thousands of years.

The ride today follows the John Day River up stream through the towns of Mt. Vernon, John Day, and Prairie City. The terrain is mostly rolling hills with occasional basalt outcroppings.

What a view!

Towards the end of the day the strawberry Mountains could be seen to the south.

We spent the night at a view area half way up Dixie Pass.  The view of the valley and the Strawberry Mountains was great.
